The EDR Trust and the NWFP Government Charted the Northern University in the private sector, in accordance with NWFP Ordinance No. XLVIII of 2002, which was published in Extraordinary Gazette No. P.111 on November 2, 2002. The Higher Education Commission(HEC) recognizes it as a private University that confers degrees. The foundation stone was laid by the Governor, KP, in April 2005, and the inauguration of the campus was done by General Sawar Khan, President Northern University on 14th November 2008. Northern University was upgraded to the "W" level (formerly the "A" category) in March 2009. There are now two sites for the university, the main campus on Wattar Walai Ziarat Kaka Sahib Road and the City Campus Nowshera. The campuses are conveniently located for visitors coming from all across the country.
The University offers uniform and comprehensive programs that focus on subjects like Business Administration, Education, Computer Science, Basic Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, and other related fields. These programs help students gain the necessary skills and knowledge to tackle the challenges of the new era. Currently, the University is comprised of four faculties, each equipped with sufficient resources to excel in their respective areas:

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS)
Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology (FEIT)
Faculty of Sciences (FS)
